The football was good with all games very competitive with all teams evenly matched. Naomh Mhuire had good performances from Ferdia Doherty, Mairtin Mannion, Jay Doherty, Mark Walsh, Jack Doherty and Tuathal Lunny. Thanks to the parents who made the sandwiches and to the ladies who served the food to the teams. Thanks also to Aidi o Gara for officiating and who is always there to help out when needed. Finally thanks to the 3 clubs for travelling to the banks for the day. The under 10s will continue training on Tuesday and Friday evenings at 6pm. There will be a Bord na nÓg meeting tonight (23/08/2011) in the banks at 8.30pm. The meeting will last for 1 hour. All coaches should attend. We had a great trip to Croke Park yesterday with the under-age in what is now an annual trip. Most supported Mayo but couldn't but admire the skill of Kerry and especially Colm 'The Gooch' Cooper. Joe Glynn took half the day to recover from his native Roscommon's defeat in the Minor game but he had pulled around by the time he had his second happy meal in McDonald's in Monaghan. This trip was sponsored by Feda O Donnell's buses and this trip is made possible by that kind and outstanding sponsorship. Our thanks again to Feda O'Donnell buses and to driver Alan Duffy who was a great man for the job yesterday....getting us there and back safely and patiently. The good manners and respect from all children who traveled was remarked upon by a Kerry schoolteacher who sat behind us at the match (she hopes to be sitting with us again on All-Ireland day!!) Great bunch to take anywhere. On a fine sunny day in Fr. Tierney park in Ballyshannon the home side recorded their ninth win of the season against the visiting table toppers, Naomh Muire. In a game that was end to end in the opening period it was Naomh Muire that got on the scoreboard first with a fine effort on ten minutes from half forward Harry Harden. The teams were level two minutes later when Michael ward popped over Aodh Ruadh's opening point from 20 yards out. The home side edged ahead four minutes later when former county man, Brian Roper got his first point of the day with a fine left foot shot. Dara White, playing at centre half forward levelled matters three minutes later with a well worked point, before Tom McHugh put Naomh Muire back in front with another point two minutes later. Harry Harden was on the scoreboard again while Roper fired over his second to leave the halftime score Aodh Ruadh 0-03 Naomh Muire 0-04. Playing against the slight breeze in the second half Aodh Ruadh levelled matter in the opening minute with a point from their corner forward. Aidi O Gara who was wearing number 2, but who was roaming out around the middle then scored a point from all of 50 metres to edge Naomh Muire back in front. Six minutes in and Harry Harden notched his third point to stretch the visitor's lead to two on six minutes. Aodh Ruadh's midfielder then scored to narrow the margin again before Sean 'The Yank' Boyle landed a nice point on thirteen mintues to push Naomh Muire back to two points up. Aodh Ruadh then hit a purple patch where they scored six points in seven minutes, leaving them four points up with five minutes to play. Naomh Muire captain, Owenie McGarvey reduced the deficit with a long range point, while Harry Harden added another with two minutes to go. Those points where cancelled out by Aodh Ruadh in the closing stages and the final gap remained four points. The final scoreline was Aodh Ruadh 0-13 Naomh Muire 0-09. In the earlier reserve game, table toppers Aodh Ruadh had a comfortable win on a scoreline of 4-16 to 1-05.
Come Dine with me....Naomh Muire style. A major fundraiser in October and November will involve a huge bit of craic. 20 homes will host a Come Dine with Me night by inviting family and friends to join them for a night of great food . Depending on the quality of the food guests will pay a donated amount after enjoying top quality cuisine. All guests will then meet up in a local central location that night where winners will be announced. Winners from the October and November nights will go forward to a Grand Final in January. It will involve a great bit of craic, genuine hosting, great food and a great way to meet up socially and the eventual winners will enjoy a weekend for two in London, eating out at a top restuarant. The money raised will go directly into upgrading very important facilities at the Naomh Mhuire GAA Club grounds so that the youth of our area have only the best. Ten hosts have already committed which is a great start and many thanks for that. If you wish to host please contact us via the website. Click here to contact us The under 13s will have training on Monday evening in the Banks at 7pm. All Players born in 1998, 1999 and 2000 should be there. Our stars of the future will head to Croke Park tomorrow (21/08/2011) to take in the All-Ireland semi-final between Kerry and Mayo and see the best player of the last 5 years, Colm 'The Gooch' Cooper in action.
