Naomh Muire got their Division 2 League campaign off to a winning start despite letting Downings go into a 5 point lead at the beginning of the game. Sean McGinley got Downings off to a good start pointing in the first minute. Three more points from Lorcan Connor, and a point from Danny McBride on 12 minutes left them 5 pts to nil in front and they were dominating midfield where Sean McGinley was giving a display of high fielding. Shaun Yank Boyle finally got Naomh Muire off the mark, and this was followed by a point from Harry Harden. Connor added another point from a free to put Downings four up with 20 minutes gone. Naomh Muire then got to grips with the battle in midfield and had the best of the last 10 minutes, and the added three points through Ciaran McGinley, Owen Grant and Shaun Yank. Over the course of the first Downings just deserved to go in at half time with a one point lead. HT; Downings 0-06, Naomh Muire 0-05.
Despite starting the second half better, Naomh Muire just couldn’t find their scoring boots, and it was Downings were again the first to score and two points from Colm Gallagher extended their lead. However Naomh Muire were beginning to control most areas of the field and they hit five points from Darragh White (2), Harden, Patrick Gillespie and Owen Grant to put them two points ahead with13 minutes to go. Then Owen Grant was fouled in the square and a penalty was awarded. Brendan McGee got down low to his left to deflect Shaun Yank Boyle’s effort round the post for a 45, a great save but it could not raise the now tiring Downings team. Substitute Shaun McCafferty added another point and Colm Gallagher rounded off the day’s scoring with Downings last point. Final Score; Downings 0-9, Naomh Muire 0-11. Take a bow the many who set up and cleared away a great arena, Donal and Mairead who kept the craic and show going, ticket sellers, car park and door staff, RCS for their help, sponsors and those who attended. To many who spent weeks preparing. The trainers and corner men who gave of their time. Judges and Ref. Most of all HUGE credit to the boxers who put their bodies on the line from the very fit to the others who were prepared to add to the hype and night, taking a blow or two. The two girls who were outstanding, Boxers from other clubs and in particular the Dungloe lads who stepped up when asked. One guarantee is that the money raised will be well spent well. Thanks to all for your support - it is much appreciated . |
