![]() The senior team suffered their first league defeat this afternoon when they went down by four points to Burt. In what proved to be a scrapy hard fought affair the visting team were first to register a score when Ciaran McGinley converted a fourteen yard free in the opening five minutes. The home team then responded with a point of their own before adding a second a few minutes later. Burt, playing a very defensive system with all bar two players behind the halfway line, were making it very difficult for Naomh Muire to get any rhythm or flow into their game in what was a stop start first half. Burt score a further two points and may indeed have a goal where it not for a miskick from their corner forward. Naomh Muire had half a chance of a goal themselves near the end of the half when Pádraig McCafferty got on the end of a breaking ball but his effort went narrowly wide. Naomh Muire tagged on a score before the end of the half to leave it Burt 0-04 Naomh Mhuire 0-02 in what was a low scoring first half. The second half saw more of the same from the home team with a packed defence coupled with a lot of stoppages and a number of bookings from referee Liam Browne. Burt's full forward scored a few long range points to extend their lead halfway through the second half while Naomh Muire found it difficult to break through the large number of yellow shirts in defence. Possibly the turning point in the game came when Sean the Point who was in the process of being substituted was shown a red card by the referee. Naomh Muire had to re-arrange and playing with 14 men they found themselves chasing the game. A second yellow for Brian Gillespie late on cancelled out any impact John Pidgeon had after coming on. The gap was reduced to two points with time running out but the superior numbers Burt where able to break forward and tag on a few late scores to leave the full time score: Burt 0-10 Naomh Mhuire 0-06. This game typifies this division where nothing is going to be won easy and where teams will take points from one another. There will be tough days like this ahead. We are now halfway through the league and still top of the table a position which if anyone told you, you would hold at the start of the season, you would surely take. This team has good character and the positive nature in which they are approaching this season and each game will serve them well. It's halfway through the season now and let's build on the good work we've done to date. Back to training now and focus on the next game. Comments are closed.
